A Functional/Integrative Medicine Approach to Allergies
Restoring balance. Building immune resilience.
In functional medicine, allergies are not viewed as just a reaction to the environment. They are seen as a reflection of immune system imbalance.
Rather than only suppressing symptoms, we ask why is the immune system overreacting? Our goal is to identify and address root causes to help your body respond more appropriately over time.
Common causes we explore may include:
Gut imbalance and microbiome disruption
Increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”)
Chronic, low-grade inflammation
Environmental exposures (mold, pollutants, chemicals)
Nutrient deficiencies
Chronic stress and poor sleep
Our Therapeutic Approach:
1. Heal the Gut–Immune Connection
Approximately 70% of the immune system resides in the gut. It is important to:
Remove inflammatory or trigger foods
Replenish beneficial gut bacteria
Support gut lining repair with targeted nutrients
2. Reduce Total Allergen Load
We work to lower the overall burden on your immune system by:
Identifying food sensitivities (when appropriate)
Optimizing indoor air quality
Reducing environmental toxin exposure
3. Calm Inflammation & Support Immune Balance
The goal is not suppression—but modulation. Support may include: anti-inflammatory and nutrient-dense nutrition; key nutrients such as vitamin D, vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, quercetin; and botanical support (e.g. stinging nettle, butterbur).
4. Optimize Lifestyle Foundations
Your daily rhythms strongly influence immune function. We can’t over-emphasize the importance of restorative sleep, stress resilience and nervous system support, and consistent movement.
5. Personalization Through Advanced Insight
When helpful, we use targeted testing to guide care. Testing may include:
Gut microbiome analysis
Nutrient status evaluation
Selective food sensitivity/allergy testing
Environmental assessments
Stress hormone testing
How Vitamin C May Influence Allergic Response
Vitamin C has been shown to reduce circulating histamine levels and to enhance histamine degradation. In fact, lower plasma vitamin C levels are often associated with higher histamine levels and more severe symptoms. Vitamin C also decreases mast cell activation and reduces release of histamine and inflammatory mediators. This is particularly relevant in allergic rhinitis, urticaria, mast cell activation–type presentations. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and is known to have anti-inflammatory effects. This is relevant, as allergic disease is associated with oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling. Vitamin C can neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), reduce NF-κB activation (key inflammatory pathway). It may even decrease airway inflammation in asthma. It supports balanced immune signaling (less exaggerated Th2 skewing), improved epithelial barrier function, and enhanced innate immune defense. Phew…that is quite a list!
Why IV Instead of Oral?
Oral vitamin C is limited by intestinal absorption:( Too much causes GI upset and diarrhea. With IV administration, one can achieve much higher plasma concentrations, bypass gut absorption limits, and may produce more immediate effects in acute or severe cases.
The Surya Medicine Philosophy
Allergies are not simply something to treat with medications. They are a signal. Anti-histamines are helpful but we aim to avoid long term use. By addressing the root causes and supporting your body’s natural systems, we can help you to reduce sensitivity over time, improve overall immune resilience, and feel better.
